The first Australian medals came out of Gabala, Azerbaijan on day 1 of the second Junior World Cup for 2016.

In the 25m Standard Pistol Mens event Australia’s Sergei Evglevski and Thomas Ashmore placed 2nd and 3rd respectively.

This is the second time Sergei has won a medal in the 25m Standard Pistol at a Junior event this year, having won the Bronze in May 2016 at Suhl, Germany.

“After my last series I was not confident that I would win a medal. But after seeing all the results I'm happy I was one of the best on the day," said Sergei.

"I had my ups and downs during the match,” added Thomas. “In the end I managed to get the medal and I’m really pleased with the final result."

Australia also secured the Silver in the 25m Standard Pistol team event with a team consisting of Sergei, Thomas and Hans Hummer. With a different lineup (Sergei, Thomas, and Bailey Groves) Australia won Bronze in the 25m Standard Pistol team event at Suhl in May.

“What a wonderful result for our Pistol Shooters,” said Shooting Australia National Pistol Coach Vladimir Galiabovitch. “This is why we continue to invest in and develop athletes that have the potential and determination to deliver results.”

“I’m pretty confident of the sport’s future in Australia with the talent of these athletes.”

Vladimir continued “The standard pistol match is a match that we train in together with the Rapid Fire.  The boys’ success in this discipline gives us confidence  that we will be fighting for the medals in our main event.”

Sergei received the Silver in the 25m Rapid Fire pistol event in Suhl earlier this year.  Watch the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Men event live online at on 20 September 2016.

Sergei is a member of the 2016 NextGen AUSComGames Squad.
